WWE returns to pay-per-view (PPV) — if your cable provider is carrying the event, of course — tomorrow night (Sun., Sept. 27, 2020) from the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida, with its Clash of Champions event starting at 6:00 pm ET with the Kickoff show leading right on into the main course at 7 pm ET on the WWE Network.

Luckily for you Cagesiders, our staff of learned wrestling blowhards is here to help figure out just how the event is going to play out with predictions for each match on the card.

Let’s get to it.

Clash of Champions predictions

Drew McIntyre vs. Randy Orton

Geno Mrosko: I get the idea behind protecting the champion by having him lose in such a way that he isn’t taking a pin but I don’t think that makes it much better. I just don’t see Drew’s reign ending like this. Pick: Drew McIntyre

Sean Rueter: Totally buy the theory the stip was only added to protect Drew while getting the belt off him. Pick: Randy Orton

Kyle Decker: I still think Randy Orton is going to win this title eventually. But with Keith Lee in the title mix and this being kind of a lame stipulation in general, I don’t see the title changing hands just yet. When Randy Orton wins, it should be more definitive. Pick: Drew McIntyre

Rev. Claire Elizabeth: This feud has managed to be pretty decently compelling but also very, very stupid. And, seeing as this is WWE, you always bet on stupid, so, I dunno, Keith Lee shows up, isn’t in the match but fights the whole time, and somehow Orton wins by throwing him into the ambulance. Pick: Randy Orton

Cain A. Knight: So Randy Orton came back after three Claymores to beat the hell out of Drew McIntyre on Raw, and then take his title while sending Drew out in an ambulance at the PPV? I don’t think so. Pick: Drew McIntyre

Stella Cheeks: Well, considering Drew McIntyre is consistently kicking ass with a broken jaw, I’m gonna have to say he retains. That Scottish blood isn’t messing around. Pick: Drew McIntyre

Roman Reigns vs. Jey Uso

Geno Mrosko: You have a better chance of winning the lottery than Jey Uso has of winning this match. Pick: Roman Reigns

Sean Rueter: Love ya, Jey. And I can’t believe I’m looking forward to a Roman Reigns/Bray Wyatt feud, but I am REALLY looking forward to a Roman Reigns/Bray Wyatt feud. Pick: Roman Reigns

Kyle Decker: Roman was always going to win this match. No doubt in my mind. I’m still very excited for it though. Pick: Roman Reigns

Rev. Claire Elizabeth: I’m writing this immediately after SmackDown went off the air and holy hell I want Jey to win so bad I can taste it after the “Which one are you?” promo. But Roman Reigns is in fine form as the ass-kicking take-no-prisoners tribal chief, and I don’t think you jump off that train while it’s rolling. Pick: Roman Reigns

Cain A. Knight: Reigns aligning with Paul Heyman and destroying his own bloodline is an intriguing way to begin his heel turn, though it makes for a match where there is no doubt about the winner. Pick: Roman Reigns

Stella Cheeks: Gold > Blood. Pick: Roman Reigns

Jeff Hardy vs. Sami Zayn vs. AJ Styles

Geno Mrosko: Genuinely intriguing match that should actually be really good. Could make a case for any of three here, but I’ll go with Hardy because I can’t imagine they take the title off him after everything. Pick: Jeff Hardy

Sean Rueter: First off, my guy never lost the title. Second off (is that a thing?), Styles is headed back to Raw soon and Hardy’s next stop should go feud with the Tribal Chief, so… Pick: Sami Zayn

Kyle Decker: Jeff Hardy hasn’t been champion for too long and unless they’re moving him to the main event, there’s no reason for him to lose it. Sami Zayn will be more entertaining claiming he’s the champion than he is actually being the champion. Pick: Jeff Hardy

Rev. Claire Elizabeth: I dunno. I can’t imagine Vincent Kennedy McMahon putting the title back on a guy who went home all summer, and Roman’s gonna need another challenger because as great as it’s been I can’t see Jey getting a second shot, so… the Charismatic Enigma loses both belts to AJ Styles and moves on to get his ass kicked by Roman next month, because wrestling loves it when folks fail upwards. Pick: AJ Styles

Cain A. Knight: Zayn and Styles each won a match during the build to this bout, and Hardy did not. Styles even got to pose on a ladder with the gold. This means Hardy will get his moment of triumph on the PPV. Pick: Jeff Hardy

Stella Cheeks: SAMI ZAYN GETS NO RESPECT! Pick: Sami Zayn

Bayley vs. Nikki Cross

Geno Mrosko: Remember how there’s zero chance Jey Uso wins? There’s just as much chance Nikki Cross wins. She didn’t even appear on the go home episode of SmackDown. Come on. Pick: Bayley

Sean Rueter: Could Sasha Banks show up and cost Bayley the title? Sure. But I don’t think The Boss is interested in helping someone else take the belt. And Nikki’s got a whole nother storyline with her twisted friend Lexi that can be used to explain her latest loss. Pick: Bayley

Kyle Decker: Not sure what the angle is here. I could argue that maybe they feel the Sasha/Bayley is big enough that it doesn’t need the title. But it’s already a part of the feud as Sasha said she’d take it from Bayley. Hopefully the run an angle that advances some stories here because we’ve seen this match enough. Pick: Bayley

Rev. Claire Elizabeth: Bayley’s reign only ends when Sasha takes the title from her. Pick: Bayley

Cain A. Knight: Been there, done that. Why are we doing it again? Pick: Bayley

Stella Cheeks: Bayley is retaining here. She needs to have the SmackDown when she faces Sasha. It’s that simple. I expect Alexa will do something fiendish, Nikki will get distracted and Bayley will score the win. Pick: Bayley

Bobby Lashley vs. Apollo Crews

Geno Mrosko: This again? Pick: Bobby Lashley

Sean Rueter: Apollo probably should have joined The Hurt Business. Pick: Bobby Lashley

Kyle Decker: Soooo many rematches. Pick: Bobby Lashley

Rev. Claire Elizabeth: If anybody on Team Apollo is dethroning Bobby, it’s either Mustafa Ali (if he still exists) or Ricochet (more likely). Pick: Bobby Lashley

Cain A. Knight: It was pretty clear heading into Payback that Crews was losing to Lashley, and it’s even more obvious this time around. Pick: Bobby Lashley

Stella Cheeks: There is no reason for Bobby Lashley to lose. The Hurt Business is regularly crushing it on TV while, sadly, Apollo Crews’ moment has passed. Pick: Bobby Lashley

Nia Jax & Shayna Baszler vs. The Riott Squad

Geno Mrosko: The Riott Squad haven’t exactly been presented as strong contenders here but I get the idea they want to get Jax & Baszler apart sooner rather than later. Pick: Riott Squad

Sean Rueter: They fast-forwarded their reunion story, so let’s give them the win here. And let’s move along to the start of the Jax/Baszler feud. Pick: Liv Morgan & Ruby Riott

Kyle Decker: They haven’t been playing up the Squad as much as they have, but I think they’re going to win their titles to complete their comeback as a team. That will free up Shayna and Nia to feud with each other, which is the end goal of that pairing. Pick: The Riott Squad

Rev. Claire Elizabeth: Nia and Shayna are working real good together, and WWE love to stretch things out, so while I think the Riott Squad are likely the next champions, I don’t see it happening here. Champs squeak it out, dissent increases over time, see you next month. Pick: Nia Jax & Shayna Baszler

Cain A. Knight: The odd couple tag team of Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler is just getting started. Pick: Nia Jax & Shayna Baszler

Stella Cheeks: My heart! It is torn!! On one hand, The Riott Squad really need this win to solidify them as a team. It’s been a long road for them to get to where they are and, superb matching outfits not withstanding, they are still on shaky ground. On the other hand, Shayna and Nia are the odd couple pairing I didn’t know I needed and am unwilling to part with so soon! Pick: Nia Jax & Shayna Baszler

The Street Profits vs. Andrade & Angel Garza

Geno Mrosko: There’s no reason to think this will go any different than it has the million other times they’ve done this match. Pick: The Street Profits

Sean Rueter: Deciding to do the change here after convincing us they were done feels like something WWE would do. Pick: Andrade & Angel Garza

Kyle Decker: A lot of charisma here but it’s just another rematch so I really have a tough time getting excited for it. This will probably be when Angel and Andrade finally split for good. (Just kidding, they’re going to draw this out until TLC.) Pick: The Street Profits

Rev. Claire Elizabeth: Do we have to? I don’t wanna. Pick: Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford)

Cain A. Knight: Been there, done that. Why are we doing it again? Pick: Street Profits

Stella Cheeks: Is this the twilight zone? Is this Groundhog day?? Is this hell??? sigh At least there are drinks. Pick Street Profits

Shinsuke Nakamura & Cesaro vs. Lucha House Party

Geno Mrosko: The entire build to this was just Lucha House Party getting a shot while also being on the verge of breaking up. Pick: Nakamura & Cesaro

Sean Rueter: They wouldn’t deny us a full reunion with Sami when everyone has a strap, would they? Of course not! Pick: Shinsuke Nakamura & Cesaro

Kyle Decker: Lucha House Party, like Angel and Andrade, are also on the verge of splitting up. Pick: Shin and Cesaro

Rev. Claire Elizabeth: Lucha House Party are imploding, the Artist Collective retain. Pick: Cesaro & Shinsuke Nakamura

Cain A. Knight: Normally I’d point out that the champs have defeated the challengers in separate singles matches over the last two weeks, which means a title change is coming. But this is Lucha House Party. They’re going to keep losing, even if they weren’t on the verge of breaking up. Pick: Cesaro & Shinsuke Nakamura

Stella Cheeks: The Lucha House Party are on a fast train headed to betrayal city (it’s right next to Suplex City. It’s not a nice train ride). Cesaro & Nakamura have nothing to worry about. Pick: Cesaro & Shinsuke Nakamura

Asuka vs. Zelina Vega

Geno Mrosko: It’s on the pre-show. They aren’t doing a title change like this. Pick: Asuka

Sean Rueter: If they’d built Zelina up a bit more I maybe could talk myself into a shocking upset. But they didn’t, and then they put it on the Kickoff show. Pick: Asuka

Kyle Decker: I remember Zelina being rather entertaining as Rosita in TNA back in the day. But she rarely does any wrestling in WWE. Hopefully, Asuka will get the best out of her and she’ll impress in her inevitable loss. Pick: Asuka

Rev. Claire Elizabeth: This is gonna be very good if it gets even a moderate amount of time, I’m quite excited for it. The outcome holds no doubt, however… Pick: Asuka

Cain A. Knight: Asuka isn’t losing her championship on a pre-show. Pick: Asuka

Stella Cheeks: As the old adage goes: No one is ready for Asuka. Especially the pre-show. Pick: Asuka

That’s how we see the card playing out.

How about you?
