This should be our WrestleMania main event, but it’ll take some work to get there

WWE SmackDown returns tonight (Nov. 27) from the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida. It is the fallout show from Sunday’s Survivor Series pay-per-view (PPV). They are now working towards TLC on Dec. 20.

The Headliner

The main event match of Survivor Series lived up to the hype.

Universal Champion Roman Reigns used some underhanded tactics to defeat WWE Champion Drew McIntyre.

Ever since Drew McIntyre walked out to confront Roman Reigns on SmackDown two weeks back, this has felt like a program that could main event WrestleMania. The match itself didn’t do anything to alter that perception. It was a physical match between two heavyweights that felt Mania worthy.

The ideal WrestleMania main event pits the top heel against the top babyface. That’s what we have right here. And while that may be the long term plan, they’d have to do some work to get there.

First off, one of these men would have to lose their title. While you could argue that they both keep them to unify the belts, I don’t think that’ll happen. That would mean one of these champions would have to enter the Royal Rumble (not unheard of as Brock did that last year), but normally champions are not in the match. However, with two shows considered equals and a very large roster, unifying the titles doesn’t feel like the right move right now. I doubt the networks would want to share a top champion with each other.

If someone loses their title, it’ll probably be Drew. Given he took the loss last Sunday, it would make more sense for him to have the uphill climb to try to defeat the man he can never seem to beat.

Even if he does lose the title to Braun Strowman (if healthy), at TLC, there’s still the fact he’s a Raw talent and Roman is on SmackDown. The easiest way to address that would be to have him win the Royal Rumble. But I’d be surprised if they have him repeat the Rumble victory given he won last year. Sure there are wrestlers who have done that in the past, but it’s rare.

Otherwise, they could just make up a trade get him to Fridays. It’d have to be a pretty big trade though because Raw would be losing their top male talent.

In the end, they could get to Roman vs. Drew as their WrestleMania main event if they want to. Creative can do what they want and if they want Drew on SmackDown, Drew will go to SmackDown. They’d have to start putting those wheels into motion soon though.

Of course, there’s the possibility that this just won’t be a big match at WrestleMania. Maybe it’s something they want to do, but maybe they want to do it at SummerSlam next year when there may be fans in attendance and perhaps use that to set up a final go around at the following WrestleMania.

Waiting that long means not striking while the iron is hot, but given how well these guys have been doing on their own, there’s a good chance this will be a big match whenever they go to it.

The Title Scene:

Sasha Banks finally got a win over Asuka, something that’s eluded her. But she still has to deal with the sneak attacking Carmella, who will likely get a SmackDown Women’s title shot sooner than later.

Sami Zayn didn’t win his exhibition match against Bobby Lashley at Survivor Series, but he had to contend with the entire Hurt Business sticking their noses in this match. But I guess that’s what happens when you don’t have any friends to back you up. With that in the past, he’ll need to find a challenger for his Intercontinental championship.

The SmackDown Tag Team Champion Street Profits picked up maybe the biggest win in their careers against the New Day on Sunday. There’s no clear challengers, but Bobby Roode and Dolph Ziggler are always lurking about.

I don’t think we’ll be seeing the Women’s tag team champions on SmackDown any time soon.

Other things to keep an eye on:

– SmackDown lost both of their elimination matches on Sunday, but since the brand supremacy wasn’t really a big thing this year, it probably won’t have any consequence on this show.

– Bianca Belair looked like a badass in her match so hopefully she’s next in line for Sasha after the Carmella feud.

– Big E hung out with his New Day buds on Sunday, which is probably the coolest thing he’s done since being split with the New Day. It’s time to start focusing on his singles career again.
