AJ Styles and Paul Heyman had a tense reunion on Talking Smack

WWE Network

Last time Paul Heyman and AJ Styles were a topic of conversation, it was because AJ was publicly blaming Heyman for his good brothers Karl Anderson & Luke Gallows’ WWE releases back in April of 2020. Rumors flew that Styles was moved to SmackDown to separate the two, and while they briefly co-existed on the blue brand after Heyman returned as Roman Reigns’ special counsel, the Phenomenal One went back to the red brand in the Draft a couple months later.

But regardless of what WWE tells us every fall, Royal Rumble is one of several times a year when the stars of Raw and SmackDown go head-to-head. And AJ showed up on the blue show last night (Jan. 29) as part of the push toward Sunday’s PPV. He then appeared on Talking Smack, the post-show hosted by… Paul Heyman.

Most of the tension they played up had to do with Paul being intimidated by Omos, and the Styles’ two singles loses to Reigns back in 2016. But in hyping a potential AJ vs. Roman WrestleMania 37 main event, which could become possible if Styles wins the Royal Rumble tomorrow, they played into their dirt sheet history…

“Let’s just say I choose to go after the Universal championship, and I beat Roman Reigns at WrestleMania, and he’s no longer sitting at the head of the table. He’s no longer the alpha. What that means, ultimately, is that you would be out of a job. And nothing would make me happier then to see you out of a job.”

As Bayley & Sasha used to say… gulp.

It’s good worked shoot stuff, that wraps up another 25ish minutes of good stuff. Heyman and Kayla Braxton are also joined by Bianca Belair, Daniel Bryan, and Alpha Academy, with Bryan in particular continuing to lay the groundwork for his own ‘Mania showdown with the Tribal Chief.
