Impact’s most epic ironman matches can provide valuable lessons for Purrazzo & Grace

Impact Wrestling will make history with their first 30-minute ironman match for the Knockouts Championship when Deonna Purrazzo defends the gold against Jordynne Grace on Night 2 of Emergence on August 25. To hype the bout, Impact looked to their past to count down the most epic ironman matches.

5. Kurt Angle vs Samoa Joe – TNA Final Resolution (Jan. 14, 2007)
4. Bobby Roode vs AJ Styles – TNA Final Resolution (Dec. 11, 2011)
3. Austin Aries & Bobby Roode vs Eddie Edwards & Davey Richards – Impact Wrestling: Bell to Bell (July 1, 2015)
2. Eddie Edwards vs Bobby Lashley – Impact Wrestling: Genesis (Jan. 26, 2017)
1. AJ Styles vs Christopher Daniels – TNA Against All Odds (Feb. 13, 2005)

While watching the video, I was curious how it could relate to the upcoming Knockouts ironman bout. There were two draws. One had sudden death, while one did not. That means Purrazzo can’t guarantee retaining if she decides to run out the clock with a tie score.

Three of the matches had a submission down to the wire. That seems a likely scenario for Purrazzo and Grace. Purrazzo’s bread and butter is an armbar, while Grace has an effective rear naked choke in her arsenal. They also have to account for referee incompetence. It can be argued that Lashley was out at the buzzer, but there is no argument to save Styles. He was clearly unconscious with a few seconds to spare before the closing bell. Daniels should have won. I hope he beat up the referee in the locker room afterward.

Purrazzo’s armbar could be the key to victory. If the champ can snatch a limb, then I would advise her to risk a DQ point by breaking Grace’s arm after a tap. Grace would have to forfeit or ride out the time with only one functional arm.

Do you agree with Impact’s list for most epic ironman matches? What lessons should Purrazzo and Grace learn from that video?
