Winners & Losers: AEW Dynamite 01/22/20

AEW prides itself on being a different and alternative wrestling show and this week’s episode of AEW Dynamite was certainly that. The show came from Nassau, Bahamas onboard the Norwegian Pearl for Chris Jericho’s Rock N’ Wrestling Rager Cruise.

Before the show aired the latest AEW rankings were released and the women’s division saw some movement as Nyla Rose became the new number one ranked wrestler, taking over the top spot from Hikaru Shida. Neither of them would be on the show but fifth place Britt Baker was. Baker was looking to get back to winning ways after a series of losses that have ushered in her new attitude.

In the only women’s match on the show, “Hell’s Favourite Harlot” Priscilla Kelly made her return to AEW to take on Baker.

As Baker made her way to the ring, commentary referred to her recent attitude change being brought on by her frustrations with the sporadic appearances of AEW Women’s Champion, Riho. Add in the inability to become the face of AEW and capture the title despite being given the opportunities and we now have a dentist with attitude.

The match started out with some mat wrestling into quick pin attempts. Kelly would gain control with a cravat and a number of stiff kicks the back. Baker would take control with a heelish hair pull, some flying knee strikes into the corner followed by a sling blade, a superkick and a side Russian leg sweep into the Lock Jaw submission for the victory.

Baker’s heel tendencies continued to flourish as she would go off on Tony Schiavone when he tried to interview her after the match. Baker would insult Schiavone for working at a Starbucks and call him a “shitty barista” before beginning to roll the crowd for hating on her because she was beautiful. It wasn’t a great promo and she needs to work on her delivery but it did solidify her heel turn.

There wasn’t enough action or consequence to give you a full winners and losers section so I will go skip it and go right to my final thoughts.

Final Thoughts

Apart from the match and the post-match promo, there wasn’t anything else to report. Once again anything that happens in the women’s division is greatly overshadowed by the rest of the goings-on in the show. The difference between the divisions is vast and sadly seems to be getting deeper every passing week. The division seems lost and confused again and still reeling from the poorly executed Nightmare Collective angle 2 weeks ago. On a positive note, there was no sign or mention of the Nightmare Collective and hopefully, it stays that way.

The Britt Baker heel turn makes sense. She wasn’t working as a babyface and her wrestling style and finisher move in particular very heelish. She now needs to back up her actions in the ring.

It was good to see Priscilla Kelly back in AEW. She has a great look and interesting character but as another performer clad in leather and lace in a leather and lace heavy programme, I can’t see where she would fit in. That being said there has been no word if Kelly has officially joined AEW yet.
