Cody Rhodes’ Nightmare Family adds new members

The Nightmare Family is expanding. Cody Rhodes made surprise announcements to add new members to the group.

First up is Billy and Austin Gunn as the Gunn Club.

Billy and Austin are 9-0 as a tag team in AEW. All of those wins came against lesser competition on Dark. After the TNT title lumberjack match on Dynamite, the Gunn Club helped take out the Dark Order. Billy made long distance eye contact with Cody. At the time, I thought it could be a tease for a future TNT challenge. It turns out that the gesture opened the door to join the Nightmare Family. The Gunn Club will be teaming with Cody against John Silver, 10, and Colt Cabana on next week’s Dynamite.

The other new addition is Lee Johnson.

Johnson joining the Nightmare Family is a nice example of being rewarded for paying dues. He has been in the jobber role on Dark with zero wins and double digit losses this year. Johnson was also a lackey in MJF’s championship campaign crew. That’s not a strong resume, but there is one reason to get excited. Johnson showed he has serious skills to entertain in the ring in a match against Ben Carter on Dark. If you haven’t seen that bout, definitely make time to watch. It was a sprint of a match with flash galore.

The Nightmare Family currently includes:

  • Cody Rhodes
  • Brandi Rhodes
  • Dustin Rhodes
  • QT Marshall
  • Billy Gunn
  • Austin Gunn
  • Lee Johnson
  • Coach Arn Anderson

That is a solid lineup with two tag teams, one established star, and one up-and-comer. Brandi is there too. I jest about Brandi, but I give her credit for her ability to be compelling. Not all of her storylines have been a success, but she always makes me intrigued to see what will happen next.

The increased numbers make me wonder if the Nightmare Family is gearing up for a huge clash with the Dark Order. Mr. Brodie Lee’s clan has 8 members plus Colt Cabana. I love classic Survivor Series matches. It would be cool if AEW did some kind of yearly TV special on that gimmick. There are enough hard and loose factions right now to put together a pretty good card. Another possibility could be the Nightmare Family versus the Dark Order in Blood & Guts (aka WarGames).

My other takeaway from new members in the Nightmare Family is that this should silence any thoughts of Cody Rhodes joining a reformed Four Horsemen faction any time soon.

Do you like the idea of the Gunn Club and Lee Johnson joining the Nightmare Family? Who else would you like to see become a member?
