The pandemic hit pause on Triple H’s global expansion plan this year, but a new report from John Pollock of Post Wrestling and Wrestlenomics’ Brandon Thurston indicates WWE is pushing play in 2021.

A new series described as “NXT India” is expected to begin filming in January. It will air on WWE Network and on television via Sony Pictures Network (SPN) India, WWE’s network partner in the country. WWE and Sony expanded their deal this past spring with a five year extension which placed WWE Network on SPNIndia’s streaming platform, SonyLIV.

While booking details could of course change, Pollock and Thurston’s sources say recent plans called for the show to launch with an eight-man single elimination tournament.

India has long been seen as a key growth market for the wrestling business, and internet users in the country often drive WWE’s YouTube numbers. The company’s signed several developmental talents from the country, and has worked with former WWE champion The Great Khali’s school there. It was also believed Jinder Mahal’s WWE title run was designed to appeal to the Indian market.

Prior to COVID-19, there was a lot of focus on Japan as the next NXT “territory”. While this new show doesn’t come along with a Performance Center, and probably will film in the U.S. or the United Kingdom, it now looks like India is up next.

More as we have it.
