It sounds like McIntyre was supposed to fight the Undertaker at WrestleMania

Drew McIntyre is on top of the world right now in WWE. He won the 2020 Royal Rumble match, defeated Brock Lesnar for the WWE championship at WrestleMania 36, inherited a giant sword that creates flames during his entrance, and just won the Slammy Award for WWE Superstar of the Year. It took over a decade, but McIntyre finally became the top guy in the company.

This is always what Vince McMahon had in mind for McIntyre. During his original run with WWE circa 2009, McMahon proclaimed that Drew was The Chosen One. Expectations were as high as possible, and that apparently included plans for a match against The Undertaker in 2010 at WrestleMania 26. Here is how McIntyre described the situation in his recent appearance on Steve Austin’s Broken Skull Sessions:

“That’s what I heard after the fact. I wasn’t told directly. I was supposed to build to a match with Taker, I was always told, but I heard basically from Shawn [Michaels]…that was the plan.”

“Obviously Mania had the great Shawn and Taker match, the retirement match. But if I had that match at the time it wouldn’t have been what it should have been.”

It’s hard to imagine that WWE would follow up Undertaker and Shawn Michaels’ all-time great match in 2009 at WrestleMania 25 with anything other than a rematch at WrestleMania 26. McIntyre and Austin both acknowledge that McIntyre wasn’t ready for a match of that magnitude at that point in his career.

McIntyre missed out on a WrestleMania 26 match with Undertaker, but he did compete in the Money in the Bank ladder match on that card. Drew heard something a bit more direct about the booking plans for that ladder match:

“I was in the Money in the Bank ladder match. I was supposed to be winning, I believe. And then I was told it’s too obvious. That’s cool. But the way I reacted at the time, I definitely didn’t say that’s cool. I think I probably said that’s bullshit.”

Sometimes predictability is not a bad thing. In this case, Jack Swagger surprisingly went on to win the Money in the Bank contract, and that was a very bad thing. It was so bad that the Money in the Bank ladder match never again appeared on a WrestleMania card after his victory. I can definitely understand why Drew McIntyre thought that booking decision was bullshit.

Are you disappointed that McIntyre missed out on a chance to compete against The Undertaker at WrestleMania?
