Don’t be surprised if Flair wins all the gold

Some places do power rankings. Here at Cageside, we do a stock report.

In this weekly series, we identify three Superstars (or groups of Superstars) who are on their way up, and three that are moving in the opposite direction. After a busy week that included TLC 2020 and all of its fallout, a lot of fortunes were changed.

With that in mind, let’s see whose stock has decreased the most this week:

Stock Down #3: Drew Gulak

Things were going pretty well for Gulak earlier in 2020 when he was paired up with Daniel Bryan, where he peaked with a victory over AJ Styles. Then he dropped into the 24/7 title scene, which was not ideal, but Drew still found some comedic ways to stand out while chasing R-Truth for low-tier gold. On this week’s (Dec. 21) Raw, Gulak’s role was to be the generic jobber who was dominated by Angel Garza. There is little to no upside at all to being put in that position.

Stock Down #2: Hardy Bros

Jeff Hardy and Matt Riddle should theoretically be two of the hotter babyfaces on Raw. But Hardy taps out to the Hurt Lock on a weekly basis, it feels like, while Riddle’s promos and verbiage are pure cringe. I don’t think this is going to work unless some changes are made.

Stock Down #1: The Miz

The Miz cashed in his Money in the Bank contract at TLC 2020 and failed to win the WWE championship. In hindsight, it’s now evident that the reason WWE took that contract away from Otis was not because they had something big planned for Miz; the change was made so that a babyface didn’t have to be the one who was humiliated by blowing such a huge opportunity. Hopefully WWE will make more inspired booking decisions with the 2021 men’s Money in the Bank contract, because 2020 was a complete waste on that front.

Now let’s see whose stock has increased the most this week:

Stock Up #3: Big E

It looks like I’m the one with egg on my face for putting Big E in the Stock Down side of the ledger a couple weeks ago. On Christmas night, he won the Intercontinental championship match in the main event of one of the most watched episodes of SmackDown since it debuted on the FOX network.

Stock Up #2: Kevin Owens

It’s not often that a wrestler makes the Stock Up column after losing two championship matches in one week, but Kevin Owens is just that damn good. He has quickly become the best babyface in WWE by continuing to fight his ass off, no matter how stacked the odds are against him. Owens had Roman Reigns beat in two separate matches and would clearly be Universal champion if it wasn’t for Jey Uso’s non-stop interference. Owens came off so well here that the option is at least there for WWE to pay this off for him with a huge moment at Royal Rumble 2021 or WrestleMania 37.

Stock Up #1: Charlotte Flair

Charlotte Flair returned to WWE at TLC 2020 and immediately brought home the Women’s tag team championship (alongside Asuka). Flair and Asuka have already won three team matches in one week, and could easily become a dominant presence on every WWE brand. The Queen is now a grand slam champion in WWE, and commentators love to remind the audience that she is a 13 time champion.

With the ability to float between Raw and SmackDown (and perhaps NXT) at will, Flair is now in position to pursue any other championship that she has her eyes on. Asuka has desperately needed new opponents for months, and Sasha Banks could use a new rival now that she has soundly defeated Carmella. With the road to WrestleMania right around the corner, don’t be surprised if Flair goes after one or both of the singles women’s championships in short order.

There you have it, Cagesiders. Whose stock do you think has changed the most this week?
