In Memoriam – Brodie Lee

@AEWrestling

Saturday evening the 26th of December, I was on the phone and reloaded Twitter, and #RIPBrodieLee was trending. As I remained engaged with my friend, I clicked on that hashtag, and my world flipped upside down.

I couldn’t tell you anything I said over the phone after that, but I had to hang up as soon as possible.

One by one, the tweets poured in. Nearly everyone from All Elite Wrestling and World Wrestling Entertainment, to sports teams and everyone in between flooded my timeline with tweets in memoriam to Jon Huber.

July 2013, The Wyatt Family debuted on the main roster. Immediately I was drawn to its members, specifically the head of the family, Bray Wyatt. But, while Bray captivated me with his words, it was Luke Harper who captivated me without words. I had never seen any of these three men previously, and I was drawn to this family immediately.

Luke Harper would eventually split from the group, and continue to have great matches, including an Intercontinental Championship run and SmackDown tag team championship run with former Wyatt Family member Erik Rowan.

Then, Luke Harper was no more. Jon Huber decided he wanted out of WWE and finally was granted his release late last year. When his 90 day no compete was up, Jon debuted in AEW as Mr. Brodie Lee, the Exalted One of the Dark Order.

Instantly, he propelled that group to new heights and was on top, where he deserved to be. He captured the TNT Title in a quick match that shocked many AEW fans. Cody was booked very strong heading into all of his title defenses, but Mr. Brodie Lee essentially squashed him, and he and the Dark Order looked like a group to be reckoned with afterward.

Unfortunately, he would be off television soon after, losing the TNT Title in a dog collar match to Cody. I was just watching AEW last Wednesday, thinking to myself “I can’t wait to see the Dark Order revived with Brodie’s return.”

This is such a terrible tragedy. Jon’s wife Amanda has stated that he passed from a non-COVID related lung issue, and was being treated at the Mayo Clinic. It’s been absolutely shocking and incredibly heartbreaking to think about how this will impact his family.

Jon was a family man, and there may not be a person who knew him that wouldn’t tell you that, based off of all the outpouring of tweets and Instagram posts. He loved his children, and he loved his wife. Stephanie McMahon, Dax, Big E, Bray Wyatt, Cody, Sheamus, Braun Strowman, Stu Grayson, and Sami Zayn are just a small sampling of people who have taken to social media to praise Jon Huber’s love for his family and bond that they shared with him.

Everyone has made me wish that I knew him personally, because he was such a loving, caring man. A person who you wanted by your side forever. The embodiment of a humanitarian. Of a caregiver. Of a friend. Of a husband. Of a father.

Thank you, Jon Huber. Your legacy will live on in your children and in the many, many lives you touched.

Rest in peace.
