COVID precaution prompts change to Dynamite women’s match

AEW

On Saturday, Nyla Rose tweeted out a statement explaining she’d be pulling out of two announced bookings because she’s interacted with someone who’d tested positive for COVID-19:

“I’ve found out that an immediate family member has tested positive for COVID-19 and as a result, I’ve been directly exposed. As per safety protocol I will be isolating/ self quarantine for the next 14 days. Why do I mention this? Because of the seriousness of the situation and the timeline for quarantine, this will affect this weekend’s Virtual Meet & Greet with Damage 365 promotions and prevent me from competing against Leyla Hirsch this coming Wednesday on Dynamite. I’m very sorry to anyone that was looking forward to these events but keeping everyone as safe as possible must be priority at this time. Thank you for understanding. Stay Safe everyone. Please social distance and Mask up.”

First off, props to Rose for thinking of others and using an unfortunate situation to model responsible behavior.

Less importantly, this raised the question of what AEW would do. For the second week in a row, they were faced with changing their weekly women’s match due to a COVID concern. While not as big a change as having to pull Thunder Rosa vs. Dr. Britt Baker from New Year’s Smash night two, losing the former Women’s champ means Leyla Hirsch will need a new opponent for Jan. 20’s show.

Enter bride-to-be Penelope Ford.

Ford’s taken a bit of a back seat in her own wedding angle, with “best man” Miro and new “butler” Chuck Taylor getting most of the screen time heading into her big day with Kip Sabian at Beach Break on Feb. 3. This gives her a bit of her own spotlight, and AEW something to make up for the loss of Rose and her manager, Vickie Guerrero.

Here’s an updated look at this Wednesday’s line-up:

– Chris Jericho & MJF vs. Santana & Ortiz vs. Sammy Guevara & Jake Hager for the right to be the official tag team of Inner Circle

– Jon Moxley returns to action

– Hangman Page & Dark Order (John Silver, Alex Reynolds & Colt Cabana) vs. Chaos Project (Luther & Serpentico) & TH2 (Jack Evans & Angélico)

– Matt Sydal & Top Flight vs. Matt Hardy & Private Party

– Cody vs. Peter Avalon
