Math will help Cena give you $1 million, but keep him from WrestleMania

This morning, we got our first look at John Cena’s Super Bowl commercial for Mountain Dew.

He looks great, it’s an inventive spot that comes along with a chance to win a million dollars, and there’s a dog made out of watermelons… what’s not to love!

But while counting bottles in the commercial when it premieres on Feb. 7 can change your life, unfortunately for WWE fans, Cena’s counting skills have also caused The Suicide Squad star to realize he can’t be at WrestleMania this year. That’s what he told Sports Illustrated:

“Currently, I’m in Vancouver shooting Peacemaker, the series for HBO Max. Given the quarantine regulations, if I were to leave Canada, upon return I would have to quarantine for another two weeks. Essentially, that would shut production down. Strictly based on the letter of the law right now, there is no logistical way I can be there. We film now until July.

“It’s very difficult to say because I know it’s going to be disappointing for a lot of people, but according to the letter of regulation right now, there is no mathematical way I can be at WrestleMania this year.”

Normally, this is where I’d say “yeah, right… workers gonna work. See you in Tampa, John.” Reports have claimed Cena’s a lock for this year’s Showcase of the Immortals. Plus, Peacemaker writer/director James Gunn said they started shooting the series on Jan. 15. It’s said television shoots take about a week per episode to film, so a ten episode season would wrap… at the end of March.

But COVID protocols do add credence to this story, as they almost certainly slow down production. And whether or not the timeframe he’s talking about is correct, Cena is reaching a level of stardom where he needs a lot of people’s permission to do something like wrestle, because if he gets hurt or sick, lots of people are out lots of money.

But hey! Maybe if a Cena superfan counts all the bottles in the Mountain Dew Major Melon this Sunday during the Super Bowl, they can give that money to HBO Max and get Cena to ‘Mania!

Not likely, I know. But I did see a dog made out of watermelons today, so anything’s possible.
