Rey Mysterio reveals he and Dominik had COVID in December

During an appearance with his son Dominik on the Start Today podcast, Rey Mysterio shared the story of his family’s experience with COVID-19.

Every member of Mysterio’s household except for his daughter Aalyah came down with the coronavirus in December of last year. This explains why Rey didn’t appear on SmackDown after the Dec. 4 episode, and why Dominik was off television all month.

It also demonstrates why much of the world has struggled to stop the spread of COVID since the pandemic began.

Here’s Rey’s story:

“It has been so confusing for me and my family to try to really understand how this works, because you know it changes every time – my parents ended up catching COVID and we were taking care of them, so making sure they didn’t catch it. Well, somehow they caught it, brought it to my house, passed it on to my housekeeper. My housekeeper then passed it on to my wife. I was with my wife maybe for about three days, flew out to Tampa to do SmackDown.

“I found out that Friday morning before we walked into the arena that my housekeeper had tested positive, so I then brought it to their attention, I said I don’t want to be the guy… [Dominik points out Rey had tested negative the night before] Yeah, we both tested negative, and my daughter who on that Friday morning had tested negative too – so keep in mind my daughter, Dominik and myself were around my housekeeper and my wife. My wife tested negative, my housekeeper tested positive.

“So then we end up flying back home Saturday. So that Friday was Dec. 11, my birthday. Saturday we fly back home in the morning. We were able to fly back because we were negative. Saturday night, I felt really sick. Woke up Sunday with a massive headache – like I don’t suffer from headaches, no migraines, nothing… but that Sunday morning I woke up, I just felt achey and I was like ‘ah’ – I knew right away, something’s wrong – I have it. My wife felt the same way, she said she had cold sweats throughout the night, she woke up sick.

“So we decide to go get tested on Tuesday, but Sunday and Monday we were locked in our rooms. We just didn’t want to go out and expose Dom or Aalyah. By this time, my housekeeper was already in one room downstairs and we were taking care of her. Tuesday, we get tested. I test positive. My wife tests positive. Dominik tests negative. Aalyah tests negative. Shit, okay, we go back home. Lock up again, now we’re quarantined for 11 days. He [Dominik] felt sick that Tuesday night and woke up Wednesday sick.”

There are some confusing bits in there that I believe are due to the extemporaneously chronicling this for Start Today’s host and Rey’s friend & business partner Chris Cavallini. What’s clear however is that the Mysterios traveled cross country after having been exposed to the coronavirus.

Now, hopefully they were properly masked at all times, practiced social distancing, and didn’t pass the virus on to any (or too many) others. And I don’t mean to attack Rey – as he alludes to, the messaging around COVID has been horrible. I have several frontline healthcare workers in my family, and they don’t even get consistent guidelines from the organizations they work for. He clearly thinks that by getting tested frequently, they were protecting themselves and others.

But as his story illustrates, you can test negative and be carrying the virus, because it doesn’t show up on tests immediately upon entering your system. The more you’re out and about after being exposed, the more people you can pass it too. Some of them probably won’t properly mask or social distance, and will pass it on to more people. Some may never have symptoms, so they never get tested, and are even more lax in their approach to public health, and…

As for symptoms, Rey says his passed in about three days and were the equivalent of a really bad case of the flu. Dom reported his experience was much the same. Everyone in his family’s recovered, thank goodness.

Take Rey’s story as a cautionary tale, though. Until the vaccine rollout gets farther along, if someone in your house gets COVID, quarantine where you are for a few days to be sure you’re really negative and not just another vector of transmission.
