Jungle Grrrl reveals her cancer diagnosis
Women of Wrestling’s (WOW) Jungle Grrrl (real name Erica Porter) has revealed that she has been diagnosed with Stage 4 Cancer. It is breast cancer that has spread to her lungs and bones and is said to be incurable. Her goal is to continue to live fully and inspire others while doing so.
Speaking with WTVR, Porter spoke about the diagnosis and the reaction her son, Carlo, has had with it.
“I was having shortness of breath. I was having a cough that was lingering,” Porter said. She continued, “I understand where people reach a point in their life where they say ‘I’m done. I’m done.’ It’s overwhelming.”
“My son asked me, ‘Mom. Can you promise me you’re not going to die?’ I said there is no human that can promise that to anyone. The equalizer among all people is time. We don’t know what that time is.”
It is said that she is staying active and is helping out coach her son’s lacrosse team. The team has rallied around her and shown their support by standing by her side in every way they can.
Her husband, who also is named Carlo, has said the following about her determination:
“It is an atomic gut punch. We’ve been together for 22 years. I’m constantly amazed at her ability to give of herself and make things bigger than herself,” Carlo said.
On Oct. 1, Porter has launched a non-profit foundation that will help cancer patients participate in fitness, free of charge. It is named Endorphasm Foundation after the gym she founded in 2013.
“The mission of the gym is to strip away the B.S. and get you closer to your soul,” she said. “It might not change the outcome of how many years, but wouldn’t you want those years, no matter what they are, to be amazing. I know I do. There are always going to be circumstances beyond our control, but how you react to those circumstances is well within our control.”
Porter continues, “I do believe my foundation will be my legacy. The greatest gift. The greatest gift is giving to others.”
As Jungle Grrrl, Porter is a former WOW Champion and holds the longest reign at 1,300-days. She won the title in 2013 and was defeated in 2016 by Santana Garrett. She is considered to be one of the originals in the organization.
WOW is currently looking for a new home as their deal with AXS TV is no longer as mentioned back in June.
