Icons looks to be WWE Network’s next must see series

After TLC, WWE dropped an extended “First Look” trailer for their new Icons documentary series on the Network.

The video (embedded above) features a sneak peak at the first five Icons profiled – Lex Luger, Beth Phoenix, Rob Van Dam, The British Bulldog Davey Boy Smith, and Yokozuna. In typical WWE Documentaries style, their stories will be told with a mix of archival footage, clips from shows, and interviews with their friends, family & contemporaries.

Icons premieres on Jan. 31, 2020, the same day as Royal Rumble. The Yokozuna episode will kick things off. WWE’s official announcement doesn’t specify when the remaining episodes will debut, but they’ll probably be tied to other event dates.

Here’s WWE’s announcement for the series and the premiere:

The series, which was originally announced in November, celebrates WWE Superstars who left an indelible mark on sports-entertainment, with each episode examining the life story of a different WWE Legend or Hall of Famer.

A member of the famed Anoa’i wrestling dynasty to which Roman Reigns and The Usos also belong, Yokozuna was a dominant force throughout WWE in the 1990s. Weighing 589 pounds in his prime, the two-time WWE Champion was a deceptively athletic super-heavyweight whose size was both a blessing and a curse. Although his massive stature made him a champion inside the ring, the WWE Icons First Look also tells the story of a man who struggled his entire life to get his weight under control.

The stories of the other WWE Icons are no less captivating, judging by the First Look. There’s the barrier-breaking Phoenix, who defied outmoded gender roles as she chased her dream of becoming a Superstar; Luger, the seemingly can’t-miss prospect whose once-legendary physique is now confined to a wheelchair; RVD, the independent spirit who carved out a lasting legacy despite playing by his own rules; and the late “British Bulldog” Davey Boy Smith, whose monumental influence as WWE’s first major British Superstar is still felt today.

Stay tuned to WWE Network social media for updates on future episode premiere dates, and be sure to watch WWE Icons when it streams Sunday, Jan. 31, only on the award-winning WWE Network.
