Ricochet just made his story must see TV
Ricochet hasn’t been doing much of anything in WWE lately, having gone from a Monday Night Raw mainstay with a relatively steady push to an afterthought to just being that guy who gets beat up by everyone because he makes it look really good. There hasn’t been much to his character during all that time either, as he’s presented like something of a superhero who can fly all around but not much else.
That’s all changing with this RETRIBUTION storyline.
He’s been getting his ass kicked by the group for weeks now, and on Raw Talk just last night that, combined with the rest of his recent history, finally broke him:
“I have to figure out some way. I have to figure out what it is within myself is why I always continue to fail. I couldn’t hold onto the United States championship for more than a couple weeks, I couldn’t even touch Brock Lesnar, I couldn’t beat The Hurt Business, and now I can’t beat RETRIBUTION, so something has gotta change. And I don’t know what that is yet.”
…
“Something’s gotta change … I don’t know what that is, and I wanna figure it out and I feel like I’m on the way but something has got to change. Because if I stay the same the same thing is going to happen and that’s someone standing over me and me looking up at the lights. Every single night it’s the same, so something has got to change.”
I can’t overstate how good he is in that video. He’s distraught the whole way, making clear how angry he is but that eventually giving way to an emotional breakdown when considering his situation. He’s basically getting jumped every week and failing to accomplish any of his goals and it feels like there’s no way out. That’s what makes RETRIBUTION’s offer to join so powerful, and likely why he’s such an absolute wreck here. Charly Caruso even mentions “if you can’t beat them, join them” and he almost begrudgingly cops to that. R-Truth gives him a quick pep talk right after and that’s when he gets emotional.
He’s just so, so, so good here. Truth, even during the pep talk, is still Truth and he’s impossible to take serious, as evidenced by Caruso outright laughing and smiling as Truth launches into his spiel. But Ricochet stays in character the whole way, and he’s so damn convincing it’s impossible not to feel for the guy.
I can’t wait to see what happens next week.
How about that?
