Brodie Lee had reportedly been hospitalized since late October

When someone dies unexpectedly, it’s natural to want to know why. When that someone is in their prime, and in peak physical condition, the search for answers feels even more pressing.

That’s been on a lot of people’s minds since we learned of Jon “Brodie Lee” Huber’s death on Saturday night (Dec. 26). The news rocked the wrestling community, and sent some within it into unnecessary speculation. Lee was 41 years old, and many of us watched him wrestle an extremely physical match against Cody Rhodes on the Oct. 7 episode of AEW Dynamite.

Some information is starting to come out which provides a few answers, while remaining respectful of the Huber family’s privacy. On the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer reported that in order to sell the brutality of their Dog Collar match, AEW planned to keep Lee off television for a few weeks following his TNT title loss to Rhodes. During a Peloton workout he was doing while on that scheduled break, Lee experienced tiredness, to the point he could not finish his session.

His condition continued to get worse. Meltzer said, “essentially, his lungs stopped working,” which echoes the information made public by Lee’s widow Amanda Huber that her husband died of a non-COVID-related lung condition. By the end of October, Brodie was hospitalized at The Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida.

AEW officials were aware Lee’s condition was grave, but kept it quiet at the family’s request. Fightful corroborated this detail of Meltzer’s report, saying members of the AEW roster & staff they spoke to had known of Brodie’s situation since early November. Those who spoke to Fightful said “they wanted to dispel the idea that anything scandalous happened”.
