AEW Rewind: Tough love for Omega, Shida ready to slay, more!

Hikaru Shida’s Twitter

Don’t have time to follow all of AEW’s online content? Don’t worry. We got you covered with the AEW Rewind, which will rewind through social media bits and YouTube videos from the past week to prepare you for Wednesday night Dynamite.

“Road to New Year’s Smash Night 1,” profiled Matt Sydal versus Cody Rhodes and Kenny Omega versus Fenix, as well as a best moments montage from 2020.

Sydal and Cody have history in tag action but have never wrestled one-on-one. Both men have grown since their days in WWE. Cody put his opponent over as fierce, gritty, and psychotic in the ring.

Don Callis did a heck of a job selling Omega’s intestinal fortitude. Callis trekked through the Winnipeg snow to discuss tough love lessons dished out to Omega. When Omega was a wee lad, he missed a Terminator dive and injured his back on the ice. He cried for help from Callis and the Golden Sheik, but they left him there in pain. Young Kenny needed to learn that nobody is coming to help. He needed to look within to help himself. Callis compared that with claims that Fenix has been coddled his whole career. Fenix has no heart, and that will be the difference when the fight goes to deep waters.

Hikaru Shida is set to defend gold against Abadon. The ghoul took a bite out of the champ, so Shida is ready for payback with a sword.

I really hope Shida gets to bring that blade to the ring. Nothing like slicing and dicing zombie guts to start the new year right.

While waiting to watch the big fight, enjoy their first clash back in March 2020 on Dark.

It sounds like Brian Pillman Jr.’s role in AEW will be expanding. He vacated the OVW Heavyweight Championship to make room for AEW obligations.

In anticipation for 5’s match against Serpentico last night on Dark, he channeled his serpent hunting skills.

Being the Elite

“Tribute” – Being The Elite, Ep. 237 (here) featured:

  • Matt Jackson spoke about traveling to the Brodie Lee tribute show. It will be tough to stay focused on wrestling, but he’s ready to do it.
  • Backstage montage of wrestlers going through the day. Brodie Lee Jr. hit Miro with a kendo stick. Eddie Kingston gave an emotional speech to rally the locker room.
  • The Dark Order sat in silence in their clubhouse. Hangman Page entered to take a seat alongside them.
  • Private Party were discussing breathing techniques when Bunny approached looking for Brandon Cutler. She had scissors in her hand and seemed guilty of something. Matt Hardy came in discuss their current arrangement. Instead of taking 66% of their booking fees, Hardy suggested 30% as a mentor. Matt exited to give Private Party time to think about it.
  • Joey Janela and Trent played chess. Luchasaurus entered wearing a wig as a chess grandmaster. He dominated Trent in a shutout.
  • Dasha Gonzalez used her MiPhone to track Alex Abrahantes. Dasha, Diamante, and Ortiz busted Alex penning a Dark Order song.
  • Kip Sabian confronted Leva Bates about letting him win at video games. Everyone told him that she let him win. She denied it.
  • Vickie Guerrero threw a tantrum about waiting to get her makeup done. Brian Pillman Jr. thought she was a nun when the apron was over her head. 20 minutes later, Vickie had a costume idea for herself and Nyla Rose as nuns.
  • John Silver defended his BTE Championship against Marko Stunt at 4:40 in the morning. The contest was to spin kick the cap off a water bottle. Silver won in the first try.
  • Mikey Rukus debuted his new, “Ghost Town,” music video starring Matt Hardy. The song rocks hard.

In terms of Dynamite, the sitdown from Hangman is the takeaway. I’m really hoping he takes over as head of the Dark Order to become a fan favorite faction. Their comedy is too goofy to boo, so they might as well repent past behavior and embrace their fun side.

We’ll close with an AEW merch sale from Pro Wrestling Tees.
