NXT reveals (most of) the 2021 men’s Dusty Classic field

From the two first round matches announced for next Wednesday (Jan. 13) and some online material, we knew a few of the teams in the sixth Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic tournament.

On their website this afternoon, WWE’s unveiled most of the field that’ll be competing for the Dusty Cup – and the NXT Tag Team championship shot that comes with it this time around. I say “most of” as we’ve only got 12 entries. A standard single elimination bracket would require 16. With the exception of 2018’s eight-team field, all previous Dusty Classics have had 16 teams.

• Drake Maverick & Killian Dain
• Ever-Rise
• The Grizzled Young Veterans
• Imperium
• Jake Atlas & Isaiah “Swerve” Scott
• Kushida & Leon Ruff
• The Undisputed ERA (Adam Cole & Roderick Strong)
• The Way (Johnny Gargano & Austin Theory)
• Legado Del Fantasma (Jaoquin Wilde & Raul Mendoza)

It’s hard to place bets without a complete picture. But if I were less risk-averse, I’d go with Undisputed ERA. The main reason is their track record, but I also like the way it would set-up another showdown with the forces of Pat McAfee in the form of current champs Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch.

But my heart is with Chase Parker & Matt Martel. Because…

Ever-Rise faces Zack Gibson & James Drake of Grizzled Young Veterans on Jan. 13. The other Dusty Classic bout on next week’s NXT is Roderick Strong & Adam Cole vs. Tyler Breeze & Fandango.

We’ll let you know when we get more information about the men’s Dusty Classic, or any information about the recently announced first-ever women’s Dusty Classic.
