MLW Fusion recap & reactions: Screwjob!

MLW Fusion was presented by Salina de la Renta as executive producer. Episode 117 featured the debut of Mil Muertes as well as the Von Erichs putting tag team gold on the line against LA Park and Hijo de LA Park.

Let’s break it all down.

Salina de la Renta’s executive producer powers were evident right away with a different opening montage to feature Salina and her associates.

Salina welcomed us to what will be the highest rated show in MLW history. She was angry at Rich Bocchini for not wearing a mask. He is too ugly for broadcast television.

Low Ki vs Budd Heavy

Ding, ding, ding. Low Ki ran forward to knock Heavy into unconsciousness. The referee called for the bell 8 seconds into the match.

Low Ki shouted a promo at the camera about his fast KO. He knows how to satisfy Salina, but we’re not talking about that business. Low Ki called out King Mo for a rematch. The party is not over.

MLW leaned into that combat sports feel by having commentary slightly off guard about the next segment since Low Ki’s match was so quick.

Lio Rush is the man of the hour. Winning the MLW World Middleweight Championship proves he is the right man at the right place at the right time.

Konnan was missing as guest commentator. They hadn’t seen him for two days. Salina rolled footage from San Diego, CA. She laughed at Mil Muertes visiting Konnan at home. It was unclear if Konnan was kidnapped, severely beaten, dead, or all three and worse. Everyone who has wronged Salina will pay. An Aztec image flashed, but it was too quick for me to decipher.

Mads Kruger was impressed by Alexander Hammerstone’s size, strength, and ability, however, he saw fear in Hammer’s eyes. Krugger dared Hammerman to prove him wrong by bringing the MLW National Openweight Championship deep into the Contra Unit underground for a match.

Mil Muertes vs Brian Pillman Jr.

Earlier in the day, it was announced that Pillman signed the open contract to wrestle Muertes. Pillman was quoted as saying, “I’m bullet proof and I got nothing to lose!” I am quoting myself as saying, “Not a smart move.”

Muertes was billed from beyond the grave. He entered wearing Aztec warrior garb. Muertes’ mask was black and gold. Salina held a skull of power.

Pillman had a case of the heebie-jeebies at seeing Muertes in person. Once the opening bell rang, Pillman immediately exited the ring. He was tentative to engage. Pillman used his speed to evade, but Muertes eventually flattened him with a shoulder block.

Muertes absorbed Pillman’s chops and blocked a sunset flip attempt. Muertes crushed with a clothesline and mauled Pillman with punches. Muertes continued his assault with a side suplex and a snap powerslam. He even gouged Pillman’s eyes. After hammering several clothesline in the corner, Muertes’ ended Pillman with a Straight to Hell flatliner at 3:26.

Richard Holliday was not pleased about the lack of recognition as Caribbean Champion. The belt has been elevated in his hands. Savio Vega’s claims of being the real champ fire Holliday up. Holliday issued a challenge anytime, anyplace to finally settle the story.

ACH has a heavyweight title shot against Jacob Fatu next week. Filthy Island is coming February 17.

Tom Lawlor will be special referee for the main event of Von Erichs versus Los Parks. It is ridiculous to suggest that he won’t call it down the middle. Even more ridiculous is ACH getting a title shot before the 2020 Opera Cup winner.

Myron Reed and Jordan Oliver were not happy about Contra pulling some sucka shit. They are ready to fight and serve justice.

Salina was pleased with the incredible show so far. Bocchini mentioned news that Promociones Dorado has been sold. Salina dodged an answer then left.

Alexander Hammerstone is not afraid of Mads Krugger. He is afraid of what he will do to Krugger. The masked man is only a huddle toward the goal of taking the heavyweight title from Jacob Fatu. Hammer agreed to show up and fight on Krugger’s terms.

MLW World Tag Team Championship: Von Erichs vs Los Parks

Tom Lawlor was the referee. I regret to inform you that he was not wearing his short jean shorts.

Los Parks attacked as Lawlor was checking Von Erich boots. The luchadores used foreign objects behind Lawlor’s back. Since the contest was tornado style, rules were relaxed.

The Von Erichs rallied with double dropkicks and double suicide dives. As the match progressed, Ross Von Erich hit a superkick and Falcon Arrow slam to Hijo de LA Park. Lawlor was slow on the count. Hijo came back with a Code Red to Ross. Lawlor did a fast count to no avail. LA Park hit an inverted DDT then a suicide dive to Marshall Von Erich. Hijo followed with a suicide dive to Ross.

Back in the ring, Lawlor went down with cramps. The Von Erichs scored a double roll-up. 1, 2, Lawlor couldn’t complete the 3 count due to a hand cramp. Los Parks scored a double roll-up themselves, and Lawlor was there for a fast count. Luckily, the Von Erichs kicked out.

Lawlor charged forward, so Marshall pulled down the top rope. Lawlor went tumbling to the floor. Ross hit a claw slam on Hijo, but there was no referee to count the pin.

Salina sprayed mace into Ross’ eyes. LA Park speared Marshall. LA Park Jr. came out from under the ring to help papa Park spear Ross.

Lawlor regrouped for a fast three count as LA Park covered Ross to win the tag team titles at 10:36.

The closing image was a Promociones Dorado logo as a subsidiary of Azteca Underground, Inc.

Episode 117 of MLW Fusion was wacky fun. It is a frustrating day to be a fan of the Von Erichs. They were screwed royally. The main event was so over-the-top that it quickly became clear to sit back and enjoy the shenanigans rather than view it as a serious competition. All the chicanery successfully built babyface sympathy for the Von Erichs to get revenge.

Low Ki was back to his old self out to inflict pain. He hit Budd Heavy so hard that it knocked a D off his name to become Bud Heavy. It did appear that the win was a slight cheap shot, since Heavy was still taking off his shirt. I’m not sure if that was intentional or not.

Mil Muertes sacrificed Brian Pillman Jr. in emphatic fashion. This was the type of match to set up Muertes’ style for viewers unaware of his career in Lucha Underground. It did the trick and made me eager for a real challenge. Mance Warner has been a thorn in the side of Salina in the past. Mance versus Muertes would be a hoot.

Mads Krugger finally sold me on taking him seriously as a character. At first, I thought he was a generic big man brought in for Alexander Hammerstone to smash. Last week’s fight proved that he can compete on Hammer’s level. This week, the confidence in Krugger’s promo showed me that he is no joke. Combine that with Hammer’s babyface promo to illustrate how MLW is doing a great job of portraying Hammerstone as the underdog.

That closing subsidiary notation for Promociones Dorado is quite intriguing. For the sake of fun, let’s assume it will introduce another Lucha Underground character. I would scream with delight if it turned out to be Dario Cueto. Famous B is the only other businessman that comes to mind from that show.
