WWE says goodbye to Larry King

Legendary broadcaster Larry King died this morning (Jan. 23) at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He was 87 years old. The cause of death has not been revealed, but King was being treated for COVID-19 earlier this month at the same facility.

On his various interview shows, most famously on CNN from 1985 – 2010, King often talked to wrestlers and others in & around the professional wrestling business. It’s not necessarily a pleasant memory, but I personally always think of the show he hosted after the Benoit tragedy in 2007 which featured Chris Jericho, Bret Hart, John Cena and others from inside the industry. King managed to raise the questions everyone had about the connection between Chris Benoit’s career and the horrific crimes he’d committed without attacking Benoit’s still shell-shocked friends & colleagues.

WWE doesn’t mention that in their remembrance of King, of course, instead focusing on his respect for the business/artform and his in-story contributions to the company.

“They are incredible athletes, their fan following is amazing, but their results are never in the paper… To me, if someone is interesting, then I am curious. And wrestlers—and wrestling—are interesting,” King once told Sports Illustrated.

His main kayfabe contribution was a run as Raw’s “Social Media Ambassador” in 2012, where King and his then-wife Shawn got into it with The Miz and managed to keep straight faces while dealing with Daniel Bryan at the peak of his Team Hell No ridiculousness:
