Blue Demon Jr.’s running for mayor and playing a superhero for Disney

Blue Demon Jr. has had an interesting couple of weeks. He will be starring in a new superhero comedy series picked up by Disney Channel, and he plans to run for mayor of a municipality in Mexico City while still wearing his mask if he wins.

First up is the news of Blue Demon Jr. starring in Ultra Violet & Blue Demon. Plans for that program have been in the works since early last year. Disney commissioned the pilot contingent on finding a lead actress to play Blue Demon Jr.’s niece. Scarlett Estevez landed the role, and now the series has been picked up by the Disney Channel. Estevez played the little daughter in the Daddy’s Home movies starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg.

According to the press release from the Disney Channel, the plot of the series revolves around a teenage girl entering the superhero world with uncle Blue Demon Jr. by her side.

The series unfolds as a magical luchador mask selects 13-year-old Violet to become Ultra, the superhero successor to her uncle, who is the famous Mexican wrestler Blue Demon Jr. and a superhero-in-disguise. Ultra begins her own secret superhero training with her uncle, all while having to navigate the ups and downs of middle school.

For the second piece of news, Blue Demon Jr. plans to run for mayor of Gustavo A. Madero in Mexico City. The political part is not what caught my eye. What makes this juicy is that Blue Demon Jr. will still keep his identity a secret if he wins. Only in the world of lucha libre would this be standard routine.

Blue Demon Jr. has maintained that he would not remove his mask nor reveal his name publicly upon victory. He would only provide details to authorities from the National Electoral Institute (INE). If Blue Demon Jr. wins, he would still continue performing in the ring for his night job as a superstar wrestler.

Blue Demon Jr. won’t be the only masked man in mayoral campaigns across Mexico City. Tinieblas is running in Venustiano Carranza, and Caristico (aka original Sin Cara) is running in Cuauhtémoc. All three luchadores are with the same political party (Redes Sociales Progresistas) and intend on wearing their masks while in office. Elections are scheduled for June 6, 2021.
