It’s time for the latest Bill Goldberg title match
The match
Drew McIntyre defends the WWE championship against Goldberg at tonight’s (Sun., Jan. 31, 2021) Royal Rumble pay-per-view (PPV) at the ThunderDome at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida.
The story
There was supposed to be more of a story to this match but bad timing got in the way.
You see, Drew McIntyre was supposed to cut some kind of promo that wouldn’t necessarily disparage any past stars on “Legends Night” on Monday Night Raw a few weeks ago but he never got the chance to get into it because the show was running long. Goldberg was rushed out and he went right into the promo he was always supposed to cut.
The problem, of course, is that absent McIntyre’s words, that promo made no sense.
The gist of it is that Goldberg was claiming McIntyre was thinking he’s better than the old guard and he doesn’t have respect for them or see any of them as a threat to him but he’s wrong. That’s when a challenge for a title match was thrown out.
McIntyre missed the next few weeks after catching COVID-19 but while he was away, he accepted the match and it was scheduled for Royal Rumble.
In an attempt to forget all that crap about respect and get back to the basics, when the two ended up back on Raw at the same time, Goldberg kept it short and sweet.
“You. Me. This Sunday. You’re next.”
Now here we are.
