Daniel Bryan isn’t the underdog for once

Men’s Royal Rumble match

It’s time to see how WWE pulls off the first (and hopefully only) men’s Royal Rumble match of the pandemic era. It all goes down at tonight’s (Sun., Jan. 31, 2021) Royal Rumble pay-per-view (PPV) at the ThunderDome at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida.

You know the drill by now. 30 superstars will spend an hour beating each other up, perhaps with the ring a little less crowded than normal, trying to toss every person they see over the top rope.

The rules of the match are simple: two men will start the match, a new superstar will enter the fray at regularly timed intervals, and elimination occurs when a superstar goes over the top rope and both feet hit the floor. The winner of the match is the last man standing after 29 other superstars have been eliminated. This person earns a championship match at WrestleMania 37.

Here are the 17 current entrants who are officially listed for the Men’s Royal Rumble match on WWE’s web site:

  • Randy Orton
  • Jeff Hardy
  • Sami Zayn
  • Big E
  • John Morrison
  • Sheamus
  • Bobby Lashley
  • Jey Uso
  • Mustafa Ali
  • The Miz
  • Edge
  • Otis
  • Daniel Bryan
  • AJ Styles
  • Shinsuke Nakamura
  • Dolph Ziggler
  • Cesaro

Daniel Bryan stands out as the most likely winner from the above list. It’s strange to see that the leader of the YES Movement is no longer the underdog, but he lines up perfectly as Roman Reigns’ next opponent for the Universal championship. Bryan is a former WrestleMania main event star, he’s still a super popular babyface, and he has not wrestled against Roman Reigns on PPV in six years, at Fastlane 2015. It just makes sense.

I would have placed Edge as an equal favorite right alongside Bryan 24 hours ago. However, last night’s news that Edge will start the match with Randy Orton as the first two entrants makes it unlikely that either of the Rated-RKO guys will be the final man standing one hour later.

There are plenty of Rumble spots available, which means we also need to consider viable winners on the roster who have yet to be confirmed for the match. This could include top stars like Braun Strowman, Seth Rollins, Keith Lee, SLAPJACK, and Bray Wyatt.

Part-timers could also be a major factor in the Royal Rumble match. For example, it wouldn’t be surprising at all to see John Cena or Brock Lesnar standing tall to end the night.

What about the losers of Drew McIntyre vs. Goldberg and Roman Reigns vs. Kevin Owens? Perhaps those men will try for better luck by taking someone else’s Rumble spot.

Yeah, it’s going to be a little strange without a live audience for this match. But anything is possible during a Royal Rumble match. That’s especially true inside the ThunderDome, where magic tricks can play out right in front of our very eyes.

Who do you think will outlast 29 other men and earn a championship match in the main event of WrestleMania 37?
