WWE releases Zelina Vega

We’ve been waiting all day for WWE to announce even just one segment for tonight’s (Nov. 13) episode of SmackDown. Instead of that happening, they abruptly announced the release of Zelina Vega. The announcement was kept brief:

“WWE has come to terms on the release of Zelina Vega. We wish her all the best in her future endeavors.”

Vega spent most of her time on WWE’s main roster as a manager for Andrade and Angel Garza. She was recently moved away from them and into a wrestling role, where she came up short in her bid to take the Raw women’s championship away from Asuka. Vega was then moved over to SmackDown during last month’s WWE Draft. As recently as two months ago, it sounded like Vince McMahon was a big fan of her work.

We don’t know for sure what the reason is behind Vega’s release, but one reasonable guess is that it could be related to WWE’s recent ban on third party deals and take over of their wrestlers’ Twitch accounts. In the aftermath of that story, she recently tweeted support of unionization.

Outside of the ring, Zelina is married to Aleister Black, so it’s also worth wondering how this news might affect his future in WWE as well.
