Kenny Omega’s next AEW title defense is set, and he’s not happy

TNT

You probably won’t be surprised to learn that Joey Janela did not earn an AEW World title shot by beating champion Kenny Omega in the main event of the Dec. 16 Dynamite.

Janela got some violence in during this make-up from the Eliminator tournament match he had to pull out of due to COVID exposure, and even seemed to have the upperhand at a couple of points thanks to the help of his partner Sonny Kiss. But this was a showcase for Omega and his promotion-spanning storyline with Don Callis. The Invisible Hand jawed with Tony Schiavone during tonight’s final segment, and the champ got a microphone to commentate part of the match while he was working it.

A missed moonsault after a big table spot was Joey’s downfall, though. After a pair of V-Triggers and a One-Winged Angel, he was done.

Which set the stage for the aftermath, which you may be surprised to learn didn’t involve Jon Moxley or the Good Brothers. Instead, Death Triangle came out to confront Kenny.

PAC told the champ they had unfinished business, but tonight he wasn’t here for himself. Omega tried to big-time his way out of a title defense, but it seems AEW President Tony Khan (who doesn’t approve of how Kenny won the belt) has already booked one.

It’s bad news for Kenny, but it’s great news for us. Omega will face Rey Fenix on Dec. 30, the first of AEW’s two New Year’s shows.
