Royal Rumble has a date… will it have fans?

During TLC last night (Dec. 20), WWE announced that next year’s Royal Rumble will happen on Jan. 31.

That’s the date most sources told us the company would settle on for their second (or third, depending on how big you think the biggest party of the summer is) most important event on their calendar.

Conspicuously absent from the announcement, however, was a location. The assumption is the event with take place in the ThunderDome’s new St.Petersburg, Florida home at Tropicana Field. Word is all the main roster shows & events will emanate from there for the foreseeable future – likely until right around WrestleMania 37. That show was originally announced for March 28, 2021, but since it’s almost certainly not happening in Southern California as planned, that date could shift, too.

We’ve been hearing for months that WWE wants to have at least some fans in attendance for Royal Rumble. That’s a big reason to wonder if the PPV will be at the Trop, and if it’s there if the set-up will be configured differently to allow for in-person attendance.

COVID is surging in Florida and everywhere else in the United States, and vaccines likely won’t be rolled out for the demographics who make up live wrestling crowds by then. But the company’s had an audience in to the Capitol Wrestling Center since October for NXT shows without major incident, so it’s conceivable they could use similar protocols to get some folks in the building for the Rumble.

We’ll find out as we get closer to Jan. 31.
