Apollo Crews finally wins a match, and now he gets a title shot
Apollo Crews had a pretty good mid-card run on Raw during the summer in a United States championship program against The Hurt Business. But then he was drafted to SmackDown in October, and Crews quickly disappeared into obscurity.
On tonight’s (Jan. 1) episode of SmackDown, new Intercontinental champion Big E fought against King Corbin in a non-title match. Former champ Sami Zayn interfered by attacking Big E. Apollo Crews ran in to make the save, and the skirmish transformed into a tag match with the two babyfaces (Big E and Apollo) against the two heels (Zayn and Corbin).
Corbin’s ringside lackeys, Wesley Blake & Steve Cutler, couldn’t get along with Zayn, and it led to the king and his knights abandoning the match. Crews followed up with a Blue Thunder Driver on Zayn and picked up his first victory on SmackDown since being drafted to the brand in October.

That right there was enough to make it a good night for Crews. But things got even better for him a few minutes later when Big E issued an open challenge for anyone to fight for his Intercontinental championship on next week’s episode of SmackDown. Apollo, who was oozing confidence in the aftermath of his victory, immediately accepted the challenge.
So Crews not only pinned Zayn tonight, but now he’s getting a title match out of it on next week’s (Jan. 8) SmackDown. Not too shabby!
Do you think Big E will retain the Intercontinental championship against Apollo Crews next week?
