Winners & Losers: AEW Full Gear 11.07.20
AEW’s latest pay-per-view, Full Gear took place this weekend and featured two women’s championship matches.
The show kicked off with a great match between Serena Deeb vs Allysin Kay on the Buy In.
Hikaru Shida defended the AEW Women’s World Championship against “The Native Beat” Nyla Rose on the main card.
Let’s get to the matches.
Serena Deeb successfully defended the NWA Women’s World Championship against the former champion, and AEW debutant, Allysin Kay.
The match was a highly-technical affair that placed two former tag team partners against one another. The two veteran performers put on a solid and impressive showing.
Kay would use her strength and aggression against Deeb, who countered the offence with her techincal prowess and submission skills.
Kay would hit Deeb with her finishing move the “AK-47” but Deeb was able to roll out of the ring to avoid being pinned. Deeb would then take out Kay with a dragon screw leg whip into the Serenity Lock for the submission victory.
After the match, Thunder Rosa would interrupt Deeb’s celebrations and seemingly challenger her to rematch for the NWA title.
Later on, in the show, Hikaru Shida defeated Nyla Rose to retain the AEW Women’s World Championship
The build to this match was very rushed but the action in the ring definitely made up for the lack of storyline out of it. This was a brutal, physical and intense match as both competitors did everything they could to take the other out.
Shida was on fire from the start of the match, flying about the ring with purpose and venom. Rose would gain control through the help of Vickie Guerrero, who blindsided Shida with a kendo stick shot to the back of knee.
Rose would target Shida’s injured knee for the remainder of the match but her downfall would come when she got to cocky and pulled Shida off the ground during a pinfall attempt. This would enrage the champion who made a stellar comeback and hit Rose with an avalanche falcon arrow for what looked like the end of the match. However, Shida would raise Rose off the mat to break the count.
Shida would another falcon arrow followed by a barrage of knee strikes right to the face for the victory.
After the match, Vickie Guerrero shouted at and then slapped Rose her across the face before storming off leaving a beaten and dejected Rose in alone in the ring.
This was a brutal and violent match as both competitors left it all in the ring. Shida remains your AEW Women’s World Champion.
Let’s get to the winners and losers from the show.
Winner: Hikaru Shida
Shida is the best female wrestler in all of AEW and truly deserves to be champion for a very long time. She is constantly on form and consistently puts on great performances. The one thing lacking from her run as champion is a proper feud and storyline, but that is not her fault in the slightest. Hopefully moving forward she will be given that or at least AEW commit to the open challenge she issued a few months back.
Winner: Serena Deeb
Deeb has had one of the best ever comebacks in wrestling. She is in phenomenal shape and looks every bit the star every time she steps into the ring. Deeb’s performances have been so good that on her debut she had one of the best women’s matches in AEW Dynamite history, instantly elevating the women’s division in the process. As a former trainer at NXT, no doubt she will be a huge benefit behind the scenes at AEW.
Loser: Nyla Rose
Not only did she lose the match but she was humiliated after it too. Her manager, Vickie Guerrero smacked her across the chops and left her high and dry. Unless the Guerrero slap leads to a new shift in character it is difficult to see how Rose recovers and where she goes from here. She has been pushed as a monster heel mutliple times yet she is never able to get the job done. Hopefully, AEW has some ideas for her other than ninety-second squash matches on Dark.
