McIntyre passes Goldberg’s test
A lot of fans were looking to put the WWE title program between Goldberg and Drew McIntyre in the rearview, and by opening the PPV portion of Royal Rumble with the match on Jan. 31, 2021, WWE did them a solid.
But they took their time starting the match, and it wasn’t just the entrances. Those tooksome time, and piped in or no, “Goldberg” chants rained down on the ThunderDome. The virtual crowd in Tampa’s Tropicana Field was loud for the defending champion, too.
It was when McIntyre ended their opening staredown with a headbutt and spear that the real delay started, though.

That sent the action to the outside before the referee could call for the opening bell. It was there that Goldberg speared Drew through the steel barricade, and gave the big Scot a handicap to overcome.
He insisted they start the match, and even that lasted longer than many thought it would. Both men landed their big signature moves. Goldberg kicked out of a Claymore. McIntyre kicked out of spears and a jackhammer.
It was a missed spear by the Hall of Famer than opened the door for another Claymore, and that was that.
Afterwards, Goldberg told the WWE champ he’d passed the test. The two finally shared a hug and acknowledged their respect for one another.
